Haylou S30 Review: Budget Noise Cancelling Headphones Tested at the Beach & Gym — Do You Really Need Sony or Bose?
Do you actually need to spend premium money to get a decent pair of noise cancelling headphones? The Haylou S30 has 43dB hybrid active noise cancelling, up to 80 hours of battery, app control and a proper over-ear fit — and it costs a fraction of what Sony or Bose charge. So I took it out of the apartment at Main Beach on the Gold Coast, down to the beach, into the gym and out and about, to see if it actually delivers or falls apart the second you take it outside.
Today I'm covering build and comfort, how the ANC handles wind and gym noise, sound quality, calls, battery and the app. One honest note up front: these are not flagship headphones, and they're not trying to be. If you want the best ANC on the market or audiophile sound, that's a different price bracket. This is about whether a budget pair does the everyday job well — and I'll tell you straight whether it does.

01Unboxing & Build: More Premium Than the Price
Out of the box, everything is packed neatly. You get the headphones and a charging cable — nothing fancy, nothing missing.
Pick them up and, honestly, they feel more premium than the price suggests. Clean design, no cheap plasticky feel, soft padding on the headband, plush leatherette ear cups, and the whole thing folds flat in seconds for the bag. For the money, it's a genuinely good first impression.
02Comfort & ANC at the Apartment
On the head, they feel like proper over-ear headphones straight away. The ear cups sit around your ears rather than on them, the pads are soft, and you get that closed-in feeling you want from a full-size pair.
Switch on the hybrid ANC — rated at up to 43dB of noise reduction — and the room gets noticeably quiet. I'm in the apartment at Main Beach with noise coming in from outside, and the S30 just cuts it back. That's the main reason people buy headphones like this — you want to create your own space. Working, watching something, concentrating: this is where they make sense immediately.
They're comfortable enough to wear for a long stretch without wanting to rip them off, which for a more affordable pair of over-ears is not a given.
03Beach Walk: Where Budget ANC Gets Found Out
Outside is usually where cheap noise cancelling falls over. Walking along the beach here on the Gold Coast, with wind coming off the water and people everywhere, the Haylou S30 handled it better than I expected. That constant background layer drops back a bit, and music or podcasts are easy to hear without cranking the volume.
They stayed comfortable and stayed on my head the whole way. Would I run in them? Probably not — they're bigger, and they'll get warm in the sun. But for beach walks, getting your steps in and just being outside, they fit in well.
04Gym Test: Weights, Treadmill, Loud Speakers
Next stop, the gym: weights clanking, music blasting through the speakers, people everywhere. Put the S30 on and the ANC takes the edge off the room.
For weights, treadmill, bike, warm-ups and general training, they work well. They stay put, they're comfortable, and you get into your session without constantly adjusting them.
I'll be honest though: they can get a bit warm during a really intense session. That's over-ear headphones in general, not a Haylou-specific flaw. For gym focus, they make complete sense.
05Sound Quality: Better Than I Expected for the Price
I'm not going to pretend these sound like flagship headphones, because they don't. But for music, gym tracks, podcasts, YouTube and general listening, they're genuinely good.
The 40mm dynamic drivers give you enough bass to add some weight to music, vocals come through clear, and the overall tuning is easy to listen to for long stretches. Genuinely better than I expected it to be at this price.
06Calls: Fine for Everyday, Not a Miracle in Wind
The S30 uses a 5-mic setup for calls, and they're fine indoors and for normal outdoor use. Down at the beach, the wind still gets through — and to be fair, no budget headphones perform miracles in a strong sea breeze.
For quick calls, voice notes and day-to-day use, they do the job. If you're taking long work calls outside on a windy day, I'd manage expectations.
07Battery, Multipoint & the Haylou Sound App
Battery life is a real winner here. Haylou rates the S30 at up to 80 hours, and 10 minutes on the cable gives around 5 hours of playback if you do run flat. These are the kind of headphones you can use for work, the gym, walks and video calls, then throw back in your bag without thinking about charging every single day. That's where the Haylou S30 makes genuine sense — long battery life removes one more annoying thing from your day. (The 80-hour figure is Haylou's rating; I didn't run a timed battery test.)
It's also on Bluetooth 5.4 with dual-device multipoint, so it can stay paired to your phone and laptop at once — handy if you're switching between work calls and music.
The Haylou Sound app gives you control over noise cancelling depth, modes and EQ. It's straightforward and not complicated at all, so you won't spend half an hour in menus before you can use them.

The Verdict & Who It's For
What I love: the Haylou S30 is easy to understand. It feels more premium than it costs, it's comfortable for long stretches, the ANC genuinely quietens the apartment and takes the edge off the beach and the gym, the sound is better than I expected, and up to 80 hours of rated battery means you're not charging it every day. The app is simple and it folds flat into a bag.
The catches, honestly: this isn't flagship-level ANC or sound. Calls in a strong sea breeze still pick up wind. Like any over-ear pair, they get warm in the sun and during intense sessions, and they're too big for running. This was also my own real-world testing across a few days and locations, not a lab measurement.
Who's it for? Anyone who wants affordable over-ear headphones for work, the gym, walking, study, travel and everyday listening — noise cancelling, long battery, decent comfort and a proper full-size feel without spending premium money. Who's it not for? If you want the best ANC on the market, luxury materials, high-end audiophile sound, or headphones for intense sport in the heat, look elsewhere — that's where our JBL premium headphones come in.

?Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Haylou S30's noise cancelling any good?+
For the price, yes. It's hybrid ANC rated at up to 43dB, and it noticeably quietened outside noise in my apartment, took the edge off a loud gym, and handled wind and crowds on the beach better than I expected. It's not best-in-class ANC, but it does the everyday job well.
Are the Haylou S30 headphones comfortable?+
Yes. They're proper over-ear headphones with soft headband padding and plush leatherette ear cups that sit around your ears. I could wear them for long stretches without wanting to take them off.
Can you use the Haylou S30 at the gym?+
They worked well for weights, treadmill, bike and warm-ups — they stayed on and I didn't need to keep adjusting them. They can get a bit warm during a really intense session, which is normal for over-ear headphones.
Can you run in the Haylou S30?+
I wouldn't. They're full-size and get warm in the sun, so they're better suited to walks, the gym and everyday use than running or intense sport in the heat.
How good is the Haylou S30 for phone calls?+
It uses a 5-mic setup, and calls were fine indoors and for normal outdoor use. They're good for quick calls and voice notes. In a strong sea breeze the wind still gets through — no budget headphones fix that.
How long does the Haylou S30 battery last?+
Haylou rates it at up to 80 hours, and 10 minutes of charging gives around 5 hours of playback. I didn't run a timed test, but across work, gym, walks and video calls I wasn't thinking about charging every day.
Can the Haylou S30 connect to two devices at once?+
Yes. It runs Bluetooth 5.4 with dual-device multipoint, so you can stay connected to your phone and laptop at the same time.
Is the Haylou S30 worth it over Sony or Bose?+
If you want affordable everyday ANC, comfort and long battery, the S30 makes a lot of sense at a fraction of the price. If you want the best ANC on the market, luxury materials or audiophile sound, spend more on a premium pair.
