Definition
Search Takeover™ is a marketing theory and framework developed by Andrew Hough and the MrYouWho Media Network for deliberately creating the information environment people encounter when they search for, investigate, evaluate or engage with a company, product or service.
It explains how an Information Environment can be identified, measured, influenced and then measured again.
This page is the foundation of the theory. It sets out the framework, the terms it uses and the evidence behind it. Every future article in the Search Takeover series builds on what is defined here.
Key Terms of Search Takeover™
- Information Environment
- The total body of information, sources, relationships and context surrounding a subject that a person or machine can encounter, retrieve, use or synthesise.
- Takeover™
- The specific subject chosen to influence — a product, brand, business, service, person, question, comparison, reputation issue, category or idea.
- Takeover Environment™
- The defined part of the wider Information Environment surrounding the chosen Takeover.
- Takeover Opportunity Score™
- A measure of how open or established a Takeover Environment currently is. High means open; low means established.
- Re-score
- Analysing the Takeover Environment again after implementation to measure how it has changed.
- Opportunity consumption
- The effect where a successful Takeover lowers the Opportunity Score, because the Takeover has used up part of the opportunity that made it possible.
- Fine-tune the Takeover™
- Identifying and addressing the remaining gaps within the existing Takeover Environment.
- Broaden the Takeover™
- Extending into connected Information Environments — other products, comparisons, a category or a whole brand.
Where the Theory Came From
Search Takeover™ developed from something we had already been observing for years across the MrYouWho Media Network. As we created reviews, comparisons, real-world tests, Short Videos, articles and other information around products and brands, we began seeing the Information Environments surrounding some of those subjects change.
When enough useful information built up around a subject, it appeared across many discovery points at once — Google results, YouTube videos, Short Videos, articles and AI-assisted search. The person researching didn't experience those as separate channels. They experienced one environment.
Search Takeover™ was developed to explain, measure and ultimately reproduce that process. Traditional marketing asks how to reach people. Search Takeover™ asks what people will find when they reach for you.

The Search Takeover™ Framework
Search Takeover™ is a proprietary theory and framework for understanding how an Information Environment can be identified, measured, influenced and then measured again. It runs in seven stages:
- Information Environment — understand the wider environment around a subject.
- Define the Takeover™ — choose the specific subject to influence.
- Define the Takeover Environment™ — mark out the part of the environment that matters.
- Calculate the Takeover Opportunity Score™ — measure how open or established it is.
- Implement Search Takeover™ — introduce the information that environment requires.
- Re-score the Takeover Environment™ — measure it again after implementation.
- Fine-tune or Broaden the Takeover™ — close the remaining gaps, or move into connected environments.
01Information Environment
Every product, business, service, person, brand, category or idea exists inside an Information Environment.
The Information Environment is the total body of information, sources, relationships and context surrounding a subject that a person or machine can encounter, retrieve, use or synthesise.
For a product, this might include manufacturer websites, product pages, reviews, YouTube videos, Short Videos, social media, marketplaces, Reddit, forums, articles, comparisons, competitors, Google results and AI answers.
But the Information Environment isn't simply a collection of individual sources. The relationships between those sources are also part of the environment.
A review discusses a product. A comparison connects it with a competitor. A video demonstrates it. Google retrieves those sources. An AI system may retrieve, interpret and synthesise information from several of them.
Search Takeover™ begins by understanding this wider environment.
02Define the Takeover™
The Takeover™ is the specific subject we have chosen to influence.
A Takeover might be a product, brand, business, service, person, question, comparison, reputation issue, category or idea.
The wider Information Environment may be enormous, so defining the Takeover establishes exactly what we are attempting to change.
03Define the Takeover Environment™
The Takeover Environment™ is the defined part of the wider Information Environment surrounding the chosen Takeover.
If the Takeover is a particular product, its Takeover Environment might include:
- Reviews and buying questions
- Real-world testing and demonstrations
- Long-form and Short Videos
- Comparisons and competitors
- Search results
- Social information
- Marketplace information
- AI answers and source information
This creates a defined environment that can be analysed, rather than treating the entire internet as one search landscape.
04Calculate the Takeover Opportunity Score™
The Takeover Opportunity Score™ measures how open or established a Takeover Environment currently is.
A high Takeover Opportunity Score™ indicates a relatively open environment. Information may be fragmented, important questions may remain unanswered, authority may be weak and important parts of the environment may not be consistently occupied. In these conditions, a relatively small amount of the right information may be capable of creating a substantial change.
A low Takeover Opportunity Score™ indicates a more established environment. Changing it may require more information, greater authority, additional resources, more time or a more targeted intervention.
This leads to an important principle of Search Takeover™:
05Implement Search Takeover™
Once the Takeover Environment™ has been analysed, information is introduced according to what that particular environment requires.
That might include original real-world testing, technical information, reviews, comparisons, demonstrations, long-form videos, Short Videos, articles, social information, marketplace information or third-party sources.
There is no universal number of videos, articles or social posts required.
06Re-score the Takeover Environment™
After implementation, the Takeover Environment™ is analysed again. And this produces one of the most important ideas within Search Takeover™:
Why? Because the Takeover itself has changed the environment. Information has been added. Gaps may have been filled. New relationships between sources exist. Authority and context may have increased.
In other words, the Takeover has consumed part of the opportunity that originally made the Takeover possible.
Someone attempting the same Takeover afterwards is therefore not entering the Information Environment that existed before the Takeover. They are entering the environment after it has been changed.
07Fine-tune or Broaden the Takeover™
Once the environment has been re-scored, Search Takeover™ can move in two directions.
Fine-tune the Takeover™ by identifying and addressing the remaining gaps within the existing Takeover Environment.
Or Broaden the Takeover™ into connected Information Environments:
- A product Takeover may broaden into another product.
- Multiple product Takeovers may influence comparisons and competitors.
- Those Takeovers may begin influencing a category.
- And enough connected Takeovers may eventually influence the wider Information Environment surrounding an entire brand.
Search Takeover™ in Practice: Techmi Face Pro
The Techmi Face Pro provides an early real-world example of this process. Importantly, we completed this Takeover before Search Takeover™ had been formally defined as a theory. We can therefore use the framework retrospectively to understand what happened.
Information Environment: Techmi, OTC hearing aids, competing products, reviews, websites, videos, social information, search results and AI.
The Takeover™: Techmi Face Pro.
Takeover Opportunity: High. Existing information was fragmented and significant parts of the environment were not consistently occupied, so a relatively small intervention had the potential to create a significant effect.
Implementation: Original real-world testing, a long-form review, written information, Short Videos and information distributed across multiple network channels and platforms.
The resulting Information Environment changed substantially. MrYouWho Media Network information appeared across standard Google results, Google Videos and Short Videos. MrYouWho, TechLifeWithAndy and Andrew Hough appeared repeatedly across the Short Video environment.
When the search changed from "Techmi Face Pro" to the higher purchase-intent "Techmi Face Pro review," MrYouWho appeared above the manufacturer itself. Google's AI results were also using MrYouWho information as source material.
This wasn't simply a video ranking. The Information Environment surrounding the product had changed.
If the Takeover Environment™ were then re-scored, its Opportunity Score would be lower than the environment originally entered. The Takeover itself had consumed part of the opportunity.
That is Search Takeover™ in practice.
Search Takeover™ Applied to Itself
There is another unusual opportunity with this theory: we can observe Search Takeover™ being applied to Search Takeover™ itself.
When Andrew Hough and the MrYouWho Media Network began publicly defining Search Takeover™, its Information Environment was almost completely open. The theory itself became the Takeover. Its definitions, terminology, videos, Short Videos, articles, examples and case studies became information introduced into that environment.
This page therefore doesn't simply explain Search Takeover™. It is part of an active Search Takeover.
As the Information Environment develops across Google Search, video, Short Videos, websites, third-party sources and AI systems, we can return to the same environment, document the changes and re-score the Takeover Opportunity. That creates a live case study of the theory being used to establish and measure its own Information Environment.
Building on the foundation
This is Version 1.0 of the theory. New articles, videos and case studies in the Search Takeover series will expand individual stages of the framework and document new Takeovers as they happen. Each one links back here.
Search Takeover™ FAQ
What is Search Takeover?
Search Takeover™ is a marketing theory and framework developed by Andrew Hough and the MrYouWho Media Network for deliberately creating the information environment people encounter when they search for, investigate, evaluate or engage with a company, product or service. It explains how an Information Environment can be identified, measured, influenced and then measured again.
Who created Search Takeover?
Search Takeover™ was developed by Andrew Hough and the MrYouWho Media Network, a global network of localised YouTube channels and Amazon storefronts. It was first publicly defined in September 2026, based on patterns observed across the network over several years.
What is an Information Environment?
An Information Environment is the total body of information, sources, relationships and context surrounding a subject that a person or machine can encounter, retrieve, use or synthesise — including websites, reviews, videos, Short Videos, social media, marketplaces, forums, comparisons, Google results and AI answers.
What is the difference between the Information Environment and the Takeover Environment?
The Information Environment is everything surrounding a subject. The Takeover Environment™ is the defined part of that wider environment surrounding the chosen Takeover™ — for a product, its reviews, real-world tests, videos, comparisons, search results, marketplace information and AI answers.
What is the Takeover Opportunity Score?
The Takeover Opportunity Score™ measures how open or established a Takeover Environment currently is. A high score indicates an open environment where a relatively small amount of the right information can create substantial change. A low score indicates an established environment that needs more information, authority, resources or time to change.
Why does the Opportunity Score fall after a successful Search Takeover?
Because the Takeover itself changes the environment. Information is added, gaps are filled, new relationships between sources exist and authority increases. A successful Takeover consumes part of the opportunity that made it possible, so the next entrant faces a more established environment.
How is Search Takeover different from SEO?
SEO usually aims to rank a single page for a keyword. Search Takeover™ treats everything a person or AI system finds about a subject — search results, long-form video, Short Videos, social, marketplaces, third-party sources and AI answers — as one environment to be understood, measured and changed.
How many videos or articles does a Search Takeover need?
There is no universal number. The resources required are determined by the environment being entered, and the intervention follows what that particular Takeover Environment requires.
