01The Problem: A Pool That Never Stays Clean
My place is surrounded by trees and it's open to the wind off the water. That combination means the surface is never clean for long. Leaves, pollen, dust, bugs — it lands on top, and if you don't get it while it's floating, it sinks. Once it's on the floor it's a completely different job.
That's the whole argument for a surface skimmer, and it's why I wanted to test one properly rather than for an afternoon. A pool skimmer that works for one sunny day is easy. I wanted to know what it does over weeks, through windy days and grey ones.
02What's in the Box (and the One Setup Tip)
There's almost nothing to it. In the box you get three things: the Betta SE, a wireless remote, and the manual. You peel off the protective stickers and you're basically done.
The one tip I'll give you — give it a sunbathe first. Leave it in direct sun and let that panel bank a charge before its first swim, especially straight out of the box. Do that and the first run is a proper one instead of a short one.
03From Box to Cleaning in About a Minute
Because it's solar powered there's no worrying about charging it with cables. You flick the switch, the little motors start up, and you put it in the pool. That easy. The remote pairs instantly — you hit the button and it starts cruising on its own.
Picking it out of the box, it's light. One hand, easy in and easy out. But it doesn't feel cheap with it — it feels solid. From box to cleaning is about a minute, and there are two ways to run it: leave it in fully automatic mode, or grab the remote and steer it yourself.
04Watch It Work: The Aquanomic Surface Skim
This is the part that got me. It slides across the surface on its own — no cord, no cable, nothing plugged into the wall, because the Betta SE is 100% solar. The panel on top is the entire power supply.
And look at how it moves. It isn't bumping around like a bath toy. It's a smooth glide, and Betta's "aquanomic" design means it slides across the top and pulls debris in before it sinks. It grabs the stuff while it's still floating, so nothing drops to the bottom for you to deal with later.
We'd had a windy couple of days while I was testing. It came across, caught a run of leaves — gone. Back the other way, picked up the finer stuff. Anything floating, it takes off.
05Ultrasonic Radar and Four Bumper Rods
The coverage is the other half of it, and it's not just doing laps in the middle. It comes to the wall, senses it, and turns away before it hits. That's the ultrasonic radar reading the edges and obstacles and rerouting so it covers the whole pool.
Underneath, it has four water-depth bumper rods that stop it riding up onto the steps and beaching itself. Between the radar and those four rods it manages itself. I'm not out there rescuing it — which, if you've ever owned a cheap surface skimmer, is the entire point.
06How Quiet It Is — and the SCT Motors
Listen to it. I turned it on and there's literally no noise. You can see the propellers going and you can barely hear a thing. It really is hum quiet — Betta have re-engineered these.
It runs two patented salt-chlorine tolerant (SCT) motors with direct drive. Direct drive means fewer parts to fail, faster response when it turns, and better energy efficiency — which matters a lot when you're running purely off the sun.
And salt-chlorine tolerant is a headline for a lot of us. Salt water destroys cheap motors, and plenty of you on the coast run saltwater pools. These two motors are built to handle it, and it's rated for fresh or salt. That's the difference between a skimmer that lasts a season and one that lasts years.
07The Numbers: 100% Solar, 30+ Hours, Day and Night
Here's the part that changed my routine. It charges off the panel while it cleans, so it never comes out of the water. On one full charge it runs 30+ hours of continuous cleaning, and even on rainy, overcast days it keeps going. It needs about 5 to 6 hours in direct sun to get back to full — all while still cleaning. Zero downtime, and no pool sitting dirty while something charges on the deck.
Here on the Gold Coast with all-day sun, it just runs. And it cleans at night too. I walk out in the morning to a spotless pool because it's been doing laps in the dark off the bank it built during the day.
The whole body has a UV-resistant coating and UV-resistant materials, so the sun doesn't cook it or make it brittle. Weeks in my pool in full Queensland sun and it still looks brand new.
08Steering It With the Wireless Remote
Most days it's set and forget. But if you want to take control, the wireless remote is excellent — no app, no Wi-Fi, nothing to set up.
You can stop it mid-run and the motors cut. You can put it in reverse and send it back the other way. You can steer it left and right. So if there's a pile of leaves sitting in a corner, you drive it straight over, clear it, and flick it back to automatic.
09Emptying the Basket Without Lifting It Out
And this is what sold me. Emptying is the chore on any skimmer. Here, I don't lift the whole thing out dripping across the deck. It's a large fine-mesh basket rated to 200 micron, so it traps the fine stuff a normal net lets straight through.
You tip it up, pop the basket out, rinse it off, drop it back in, and you're on your way again. About ten seconds — and I did it without taking the Betta out of the water. It holds plenty, so I only check mine every few days unless we've had a windstorm.
When I pulled the basket after a run, the amount that came out of the pool was honestly incredible — leaves, pollen, dust, dead bugs, all of it caught up top instead of dropped on the floor.
10The Catches, Honestly
You know I give it straight, so here's what isn't perfect.
It's a surface skimmer. It does that job brilliantly, but it cleans the top of the water — not the floor and walls. If you want that covered too, it's a tag team with a pool cleaner: the Betta grabs everything on the surface before it sinks, and the floor cleaner handles what's already down there. What I do know is it does the surface job better than me and a net ever did.
It needs a minimum of five inches of water to run. That's straight from the manual, so nobody gets caught out — it's not designed for infinity pools. For a normal pool like mine, no issue at all.
A long run of grey days leans on the battery. It still cleans, but you'll notice it drawing down that 30-hour bank rather than topping up fast. Here in Queensland that's rarely a problem for long.
