I walked into the surf at Surfers Paradise this morning and threw a brand-new flagship phone straight in the water. Picked it up running, shook it off, kept filming — no drama, no panic, still works, no issues at all. That's the Oukitel WP500 Ultra, and it's the first rugged phone I've tested that stops feeling like a compromise. I've reviewed a lot of Oukitel phones on this channel — the WP61 Ultra with its insane 20,000mAh battery and thermal camera blew me away — but this one is Oukitel pushing properly into flagship territory while keeping everything that makes a rugged phone actually useful in the real world.

Today we're testing the Oukitel WP500 Ultra everywhere you actually use a phone, here on the Gold Coast — full water immersion at the beach, a drop test onto a hard surface, the 640×512 thermal camera, infrared night vision in complete darkness, that hardware privacy kill switch, the camping light panel, plus battery, gaming, calls and the built-in toolkit. Not talked about — actually shown. And I'll say it up front: this is my favourite Oukitel yet, and by the end you'll understand why.

01What Is the Oukitel WP500 Ultra?

The WP500 Ultra is a rugged Android flagship — a phone built to be dropped, drowned and worked with, but carrying the internals of a proper flagship instead of the usual rugged-phone compromise. It's IP68 and IP69K rated and certified, runs Android 16 on a MediaTek Dimensity 8300, and packs three separate camera systems: a 180MP AI main camera at f/1.8, an 8MP dedicated infrared night vision sensor, and a 640×512 thermal imaging camera.

Then there's the feature I genuinely haven't seen on another phone — a hardware privacy kill switch on the side that physically cuts GPS, microphones and both cameras. Not a software toggle. Power physically cut. Add a built-in camping light panel, 24GB of RAM expandable to 36GB, 1TB of storage, a 10,000mAh battery with 45W fast charging and NFC payments, and this thing is absolutely brimming with features. The real question is whether they all work — which is what the rest of this is about.

02Unboxing & First Impressions

Out of the box you get the phone, a 45W fast charger, a USB-C cable, a SIM tool and the paperwork. No case in there — because the phone is the case. First impression in hand: bold orange, aggressive-looking, and it means business.

Next to the WP61 Ultra it feels far more manageable. That one carries 20,000mAh; this is 10,000mAh, and you feel the difference — it's still chunky and solid, but it gets the job done a lot better day to day. Around the edges you've got exposed screws, reinforced corners and a rubberised grip, all built to take a real beating. And there on the side is the privacy kill switch. The camera module is serious too, with the main camera, the night vision sensor and the thermal system all stacked together.

03The Water Test: Straight Into Surfers Paradise

This is the one I opened the video with. Surfers Paradise surf, phone straight in, picked it up running. IP68 and IP69K means this genuinely handles full water immersion, not just splashes — and it came out working perfectly, no marks, no issues at all.

Living on the Gold Coast, that matters far more than a spec sheet suggests. Beach, pool, out and about, sand and salt water in everything. This isn't a phone that panics when life happens.

04The Drop Test

Then the drop test, and I always get nervous doing these. I put the plastic case over it so I could see what was happening, then dropped it straight down onto its face on a hard surface. The result: no marks, no chips, nothing. It worked absolutely perfectly afterwards. For a phone you're taking onto a job site or up a trail, that's the entire point of buying rugged in the first place.

05The Privacy Kill Switch

Here's the feature I've never seen on a phone before. One press of the button on the side and your GPS is disconnected, the microphones are cut and both cameras are disabled — at hardware level, not software level. No app, no hack, no remote access can override it, because the power is physically cut.

For trades out on site, field workers, security professionals — honestly, anyone who values their privacy — this is significant. Simple, clean and brilliant, and I'm genuinely surprised it took this long for someone to actually build it in.

06The 180MP Main Camera & 32MP Front

The main camera is a 180MP AI sensor with an f/1.8 aperture, and shooting out and about is where it makes a real difference. The detail is incredible — you can see the water on the boards, the texture of the waves. All that resolution means you can crop right in and still hold a sharp image, with AI enhancing every frame automatically. Natural light, movement, real conditions, not a lightbox.

The front camera is a 32MP Sony IMX616, and filming myself at Reedy Beach and down by the river it gave clear, natural colour with the Gold Coast sitting nicely behind me. It's genuinely good for content creation and video calls. Compared to previous Oukitel phones, they've stepped it up a fair way here.

07Night Vision & the Thermal Camera

The 8MP dedicated infrared night vision camera is not a brightened regular camera — this is real infrared. I tested it properly in the apartment and around the river at night: the river, the surroundings, shapes and movement, all visible in complete darkness. Side by side with the standard camera and a torch, the difference in what you can actually see is obvious. For wildlife, camping trips or security, it's a genuinely useful tool.

The thermal camera is 640×512, and that's a massive upgrade on the WP61 Ultra's 256×192. You notice it immediately — the thermal image is sharper, more detailed and far more useful. Pointing it at the apartments you can see straight away what's running hottest. For electricians, HVAC technicians and building inspectors, that's a professional tool living in your pocket. For camping, hiking and wildlife it's just brilliant.

08The Camping Light Panel

The other feature I love is the camping light. This isn't a phone flash — it's a dedicated light panel built into the phone, with multiple brightness modes and multiple levels. I ran through every level on camera and it's bright enough to light up a whole campsite. For camping, or for working at night, it's brilliant.

09Performance, Display & Gaming

Running it all is a MediaTek Dimensity 8300 — a real step up from the WP61 Ultra — paired with 24GB of RAM expandable to 36GB and 1TB of storage expandable to 2TB. In daily use it's fast and responsive with no lag. Apps open instantly, maps load quickly, and switching between the thermal camera, the regular camera and night vision is smooth. Gaming is smooth and genuinely impressive too, handling demanding titles without any issues.

The screen deserves attention. It's a 6.78-inch FHD+ 120Hz display at 550 nits behind Corning Gorilla Glass. Playing a movie on it, the picture is stunning — vivid colour, sharp detail, smooth motion — and 120Hz keeps everything fluid whether it's a fast action sequence or scrolling maps at the beach. Outdoors in full Queensland sun it stays completely readable without squinting, which is exactly where most rugged phones sacrifice things and Oukitel hasn't. It's also Widevine L1 certified, so you get full HD streaming on Netflix, Disney+ and Prime — not every phone has that, and it makes a real difference.

Gemini AI is built in and genuinely useful for quick summaries, voice search and writing help. NFC payments are there, and the full satellite GPS system locks on fast and stays accurate out in the open.

10Battery & Charging

You get 10,000mAh with 45W fast charging. It's not the WP61 Ultra's insane 20,000mAh, but in the real world out here: a full day at the beach, thermal camera testing, filming, GPS running and a bit of gaming — and I still had battery left at the end of the day. On paper it's rated at 1,000 hours standby, 105 hours talk time, 20 hours of video and 20 hours of gaming.

This is a phone you charge every couple of days with normal use, not every night. And when you do need to top it up, 45W means you're not waiting around.

11Calls & the Built-In Toolkit

On call quality — this phone is loud. Really loud. On speakerphone you can hear it clearly over background noise, over traffic, over tools running on a job site. The calls themselves are clear and crisp with no cutting out, and the microphone picks up your voice cleanly even in noisy environments. If you take a lot of calls on site or outdoors, that matters.

One of the things I love about Oukitel's rugged phones is the built-in toolkit, and the WP500 Ultra has a proper set. There's a spirit level — genuinely useful on a job site, setting up equipment or hanging something on a wall — plus a gyroscope and a full compass running off the multi-satellite system. GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou and Galileo all work together for accurate positioning wherever you are. These are the features that make a rugged phone genuinely useful to tradespeople and outdoor workers, and the key thing is that they all actually work. Not every rugged phone can say that.

I've got both here, so here's the honest comparison. The WP61 Ultra wins on battery — 20,000mAh versus 10,000mAh — and if maximum battery is everything to you, that's your phone. But the WP500 Ultra wins almost everywhere else.

The WP61 Ultra was built for outdoors — drop it and it won't break, it's basically unbreakable, and it's the one for people who are out constantly and want the biggest battery going. The WP500 Ultra is for people who want flagship performance, better imaging, privacy protection and rugged durability all in one — and it still works as a serious camera.
