I'm standing at Main Beach on the Gold Coast, the surf is going off through a hole in the sandbank behind me, there's wind, there's people, there's ocean noise coming from every direction — and I can't hear a single bit of it. That's the JBL Live 780NC doing its job. I love testing outdoors, and this is exactly why: you don't know how good a pair of noise cancelling headphones really is until you use them somewhere genuinely noisy. Not a studio. A beach with the wind up.

I've been testing JBL products on this channel for six years — earbuds, speakers, soundbars, headphones — so I know this brand inside and out. Today we're going through the new Live 780NC, and I've had them everywhere: the beach, the gym, running the Broadwater, walking around Surfers Paradise, at home watching movies, and on work calls with the wind blowing straight down the mic. The question I wanted to answer is a simple one. Are these the best everyday JBL headphones yet?

01What Are the JBL Live 780NC?

The Live 780NC is JBL's new over-ear, sitting in the middle of the range — above the cheaper Tune series, below the flagship Tour models. You get 40mm drivers, True Adaptive Noise Cancelling 2.0, Ambient Aware and TalkThru, JBL Spatial Sound 3.0, Personi-Fi 3.0, Auracast, multipoint, Hi-Res certified audio, and Bluetooth 6.0 with LE Audio and LDAC. Battery is the headline number: up to 80 hours with ANC off, 50 hours with it on. AU$249.95, in five colours — black, blue, green, sand and white.

02Unboxing, Build & Comfort

Everything's packed neatly and securely — JBL always nails this bit. In the box you get the headphones, a USB-C charging cable, a USB-C to 3.5mm cable and a fold-flat pouch. Pulling them out for the first time, they feel like a proper solid pair of JBL headphones: metal hinges, leatherette ear cups, a silicone headband. They flex without creaking. Not something you'd be scared to bang around in a bag.

They're 260g — substantial without being heavy — and they fold flat into the pouch in about five seconds. First wear, they're immediately comfortable. The over-ear cups are deep enough that my ears sit fully inside, so you get a soft passive seal before the noise cancelling even kicks in. Firm grip, stays on your head, no pressure points. I wore these for long sessions outside and at home and never once felt like I needed to take them off.

One honest flag: a couple of other reviewers have called out the clamping force. For me it was perfect — and it's actually why they're so good for running — but if you've got a larger head, try them on in store if you can.

03The Beach Test: ANC vs Wind, Surf & Crowds

This is the one that matters. Main Beach, surf up, wind going, people everywhere. Real conditions. I switched the active noise cancelling on and honestly — it works. The ocean drops back, the wind noise fades, and I'm locked into whatever I'm listening to. I actually lost track of time standing there, which doesn't happen to me very often.

Later on there was a helicopter going over the water and I couldn't hear it at all through the headphones. Didn't know it was there until I took them off. Six years of testing JBL, and the ANC on these is genuinely up there with the best they've done at this price point.

Then there's Ambient Aware. One tap and you're back in the real world — traffic, people, bikes coming up behind you on the esplanade. One tap and you're gone again. Living on the Gold Coast waterfront I use that constantly, and the transition on these is smooth and instant.

04Running the Broadwater

Over-ear headphones and running don't usually mix, so I took them out along the beach for about 20 minutes to find out. They performed better than I expected. That clamping force I mentioned is exactly why: they didn't bounce and didn't slide, they just sat there the whole way. No adjusting, no fiddling, no reaching up mid-stride.

They also didn't make me sweat, which out in the Gold Coast sun with over-ear cups on is genuinely impressive. And the sound while running was great — energy, punch, the kind of sound that actually makes you want to push harder. If you'd written off over-ears for exercise, these are worth another look.

05The Gym Test: Bass, Seal & Sweat

Half an hour at the gym with these on. Weights clanking, music blasting through the ceiling speakers, people everywhere — completely gone with the ANC on. Just my playlist and that bass. The seal is strong enough that I couldn't hear the gym's own music above me at all, and it doesn't leak much back out either.

If you're a gym person you're going to love the default sound on these. It hits hard, it's got energy, it suits a workout perfectly. But I'll be straight with you: the default tuning is bass heavy. Other reviews have said the same. If you want something more balanced, jump on the JBL Headphones app, hit the Studio EQ preset or dial it back yourself on the 10-band equaliser. Thirty seconds and it transforms them.

06Calls on the Move

Walking along the beach with the wind going straight behind me, I made a call — and the person on the other end had no idea I was outside. That's the test right there. The dual beam-forming mics with the AI-trained algorithm just cut through it. Voice came through clear, no added weirdness, no wind blasting down the line.

For anyone taking work calls on the move, these are genuinely strong. It's the best mic performance I've tested from JBL at this price point.

07At Home: Movies, Spatial Sound & the App

Home is where I think most people will spend the majority of their time with these, and they deliver. Switch on JBL Spatial Sound 3.0 for movies and it opens right up — real depth, real dimension, films feel bigger. I watched a couple of movies with these on and forgot I was wearing headphones. That's the best verdict I can give for comfort and sound combined.

The JBL Headphones app is worth spending time in. Connect the headphones, select the Live 780NC, and the general tab gives you ANC, Ambient Aware and TalkThru, plus personal sound amplification so you can boost what's around you when you're crossing roads. There's video mode for lower latency, Auracast for audio sharing, and LE Audio if you want to push the quality further.

On the audio side you've got the EQ presets — I use Vocal a lot — the 10-band equaliser, Spatial Sound modes that make it feel like a sound studio or a concert venue, and Personi-Fi 3.0, which builds a sound profile specifically around how you hear. I set this up and it made a noticeable difference: clearer vocals, better detail, more personal. Worth doing. Then there's customisable touch controls, wear detection for auto-pause, auto-off and relax mode. It's a fantastic app, and it's a big part of what you're paying for.

08Battery Life

Up to 80 hours with ANC off, 50 hours with ANC on. In practice I got nearly a full week of daily use — beach, gym, home, the lot — without charging. And if you do run them flat, five minutes on the charger gets you four hours of playback, so you're generally never caught out. It's one of the strongest battery performances at this price point, full stop.

09Live 780NC vs Tour One M3: Where It Sits

After six years of testing JBL, where do these land in the range? The Tour One M3 is still the flagship — eight microphones, the Smart Tx transmitter, spatial EQ, head tracking, a 70-hour battery, the full package. No argument there.

But the Live 780NC gets surprisingly close on everything that actually matters day to day: ANC, comfort, call quality, sound and battery. It isn't trying to be the M3. It's trying to be the best everyday JBL headphones — and after the beach, the run, the gym, walking around Surfers, and movies and calls at home, I think it nails it.
