Half the crowd at the expo was standing around one slope, watching a robot mower drive straight up it. Not creep up it, not slip sideways and give up — drive up it, turn at the top and carry on. That's a 42° incline, and most robot mowers tap out at half that. The machine doing it was the GOKO M6, a four-wheel-drive AI robot lawn mower that's just launched in Australia, and I got my hands on it for the best part of a day.

I'm at the Lawn and Land Equipment Expo here on the Gold Coast, testing the M6 on GOKO's own demo terrain — the slope climb, the four-wheel-drive traction over uneven ground, the obstacle-avoidance run, the cut quality and the auto-docking. They say it's all-terrain, so that's what I put to the test. Straight up front, because I give it to you straight: this is a first hands-on, not the full long-term test. The real test is at my place over weeks, and that one's coming.

01What Is the GOKO M6?

The GOKO M6 is a four-wheel-drive AI robot lawn mower with active front-wheel steering and adaptive suspension. It mows your lawn on its own, with no boundary wire to bury, and it's built for the blocks that beat normal robot mowers — steep ground, uneven ground, and big ground. GOKO reckon it suits anything from a quarter-acre up to two and a half acres, which covers most proper Aussie blocks.

Start it up and three things hit you straight away: it's quiet, it's efficient, and it's fast. It runs under 62dB, so you're not annoying the neighbours at seven on a Sunday morning. But the clever bit is what you can't see, and that's where I'd start.

02No Boundary Wire: Walk It Once, It's Ready

Normally with a robot mower you're pegging a wire around the entire yard before you can even start — the job everybody hates, and the reason a lot of people never buy one. Not this one. There's no boundary wire at all. You walk it around the perimeter once to map it, and it's ready to mow.

That's CyberNav Fusion navigation doing the work — RTK, nRTK, VSLAM and IMU with wheel odometry, all working together so it holds a dead-straight line and knows exactly where it is. It'll store a map of up to 15 acres across 250 zones. And if it loses RTK signal for a bit — under trees, down the side of the house — it keeps mowing on vision alone for another 150 metres, or about 10 minutes, then locks back on. Walk to map, ready to mow. That simple.

03The Slope Test: 42° and Proper Four-Wheel Drive

This is the headline, and it's the reason half the crowd was gathered around that hill. We watched it go straight up. 42° of incline — a 90% gradient. Most robot mowers give up at half of that.

The way it does it is proper four-wheel drive with adaptive suspension and dual independent front-wheel steering. So it climbs the steep stuff, then still turns tight and tidy back on the flat without tearing up the grass — which is the trade-off you usually get with grunty mowers. There's 3 inches of clearance under it too, so it rides over roots and bumps instead of bellying out on them.

On a hilly Aussie block, that four-wheel drive and all-terrain ability is the difference between a robot mower that actually works and one that gets stuck halfway up and sends you a notification about it.

04The Cut: Blades, Width and Height

The cutting width is 16.5 inches (420mm), so every pass covers a big strip and the lawn gets done fast. Underneath you get twin 250W blade motors on a floating deck that follows the ground, so your height stays even and you get that clean striped finish rather than a scalped patch every time the ground dips.

You also get two blade options. There are razor discs — two sets of six little blades spinning at 3,000 RPM for a close, low trim — and rotary mulching blades running at 5,000 RPM for thicker growth. They're interchangeable and genuinely easy to swap, so you match the blade to the grass you've actually got rather than the grass in the brochure.

And this is something I really liked: you set the cutting height yourself, anywhere from 1 to 4 inches (25–100mm). You're in control of exactly how you want the lawn, not stuck with whatever the machine reckons is right.

05QuadVision AI: The Teddy Bear Test

See the cameras on the front? That's QuadVision AI obstacle avoidance — four cameras, a stereo pair up front and one on each side — and it recognises over 200 different object types. People, pets, toys, garden furniture.

We put a teddy bear in its path. It saw it, worked around it, and carried on — no stopping, no bulldozing, no shredded toy and no cricket bat in three pieces. And it does that day or night. If you've got kids or a dog running around the yard, that's the feature that actually matters, more than any number on the box.

06Battery, Docking and How Much It Gets Through

So how much can it actually get through? On the standard 12Ah lithium-ion battery you're looking at around 120 minutes of run time — about half an acre (2,000m²) on a single charge. Step up to the twin 24Ah setup and it's around 240 minutes, or a full acre (4,000m²) in one run without stopping. Across a full day with recharges, that's up to two acres.

And when it does need juice it's quick — 20 to 80% in about 45 minutes. It auto-docks, charges, and resumes right where it left off, all on its own. I watched it do exactly that at the expo: it knew precisely where it was, turned around and slotted straight into the dock. You've also got the choice of letting it run its own path or taking over and steering it yourself.

07Build, Weather and Theft Protection

Get up close and you can see why it turns heads. It genuinely looks a part — sleek and stylish, that Tesla thing I keep coming back to. But it's not just looks. Pick it up and it's 26.5kg on the standard battery, 28.5kg with the twin. Solid, planted, commercial-feeling kit. It's not some flimsy toy that'll crack the first time it clips a retaining wall.

The whole body is IP66 rated, so rain, hose-downs and sprinklers don't bother it, and it's got rain detection built in — the weather turns, it takes itself home. It's rated to run from 0 to 40°C, which up here on the Gold Coast you'll be leaning on at the top end more than the bottom.

Theft protection is serious too, and on a machine this size sitting out on your lawn it needs to be: GPS tracking and ownership authentication. If it gets lifted or leaves your yard, you know about it instantly.

08App, Screen and Voice Control

You can run the whole thing two ways. On the mower itself there's a bright 4.3-inch colour screen with a tactile knob, so you can adjust it right there without pulling your phone out — which I appreciate more than I expected to. Or do the lot from the app: set your mowing zones, your cutting height, even the stripe angle you want across the lawn. Put it on a schedule and you get instant notifications on every session.

It's connected over 4G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and it works with Google Home and Alexa, so you can set it going with your voice if that's your thing.

09GOKO M6 vs a Standard Wire-Based Robot Mower

This is the real comparison, because most people aren't choosing between the M6 and a ride-on. They're choosing between it and the perimeter-wire robot mowers that have been on the shelf for years. Here's how they stack up on the things that actually decide it.

So if you've got a small flat rectangle of lawn, a basic wire mower will do you and cost less. The M6 earns its money on the yards that break those machines — slopes, acreage, awkward shapes and kids' toys everywhere.

10Also at the Expo: The GOKO X5

While I was there they showed me the GOKO X5 as well, and it's a different beast — a commercial-grade machine that does mowing, snow blowing and towing. I watched it push through long thick grass, clear vegetation and tow a load, and it didn't flinch. Not the one most homeowners need, but if you've got acreage or you're running a property, it's worth knowing it exists. That's one I'm keen to test properly down the track.

The Verdict & Who It's For

What impressed me: the look, first of all — it's flash, like a Tesla, and clearly easy to use. It runs quiet, efficient and fast. That slope performance is something I genuinely haven't seen a robot mower do, and the four-wheel-drive all-terrain ability is a huge plus on hilly ground. The wire-free setup and intelligent mapping take out the job everyone hates. I love that you set the cutting height yourself. The obstacle avoidance reacted exactly the way it should. The battery life looks strong, and it auto-docks and gets on with it.

The catches, honestly: I've seen it work here at the expo, on GOKO's own demo terrain, and that's a controlled setup — of course it looks good there. I haven't lived with it yet. The real test is at my place: how it holds a slope over weeks, how the battery does on a big real run, how tight it cuts edges, and how it copes with a proper Gold Coast downpour. That's all coming, and I'll tell you exactly how it goes, good and bad, like always. It's also only just launched here, so there's no long-term Australian track record on servicing or spare parts yet, and pricing may move as it settles into the market.

Who's it for? Anyone with a steep block, a hilly yard, a big lawn or acreage up to about two and a half acres — especially if burying a boundary wire around the whole place is what's stopped you buying a robot mower until now. If you've got kids and pets in the yard, the obstacle avoidance matters. If you've got a small flat courtyard, this is more mower than you need.
