Aiper IrriSense N2 SE smart sprinkler running on Andy's waterfront lawn on the Gold Coast
Area six, press start — and it waters the lawn, not me. That's what the map is for.

We live on the water here on the Gold Coast, backing straight onto the canal — and you'd think that means a green lawn. It doesn't. Heading into El Niño season the backyard was dry and the front yard was practically dead. That's the honest problem with watering by hand: you water what you walk past. The bit by the back door gets done every time, the bit round the side never does, and by the time you notice, it's gone. So for the last couple of weeks I've handed the job to the Aiper IrriSense N2 SE — an AI smart sprinkler that maps your lawn, waters itself, and tells you exactly how much water it used. No more hose for us.

Today we're unboxing it, setting it up and pairing the app, then testing it out the back, out the front and right along the canal edge — mapping zones, watching the flow adjust itself, checking the water savings and running it from the couch. One honest caveat up front: this is a couple of weeks of real use, not a full season. I can show you how it waters and what it saves on each run — whether the dead patch out front comes all the way back is a longer story, and I'll follow up.

01What Is the Aiper IrriSense N2 SE?

The IrriSense N2 SE is a smart sprinkler that sits on your lawn, connects to your hose and Wi-Fi, and waters only the areas you've mapped in the Aiper app. It's a rotor sprinkler, an irrigation controller and an electric valve rolled into one unit. You draw your zones on your phone, set the days, run time and volume for each, and it does the rest — turning its flow up and down depending on which part of the lawn it's on, and pausing the schedule when rain's on the way.

I kicked off the first demo on the waterfront lawn with a boat sitting behind me. Pressed area six, pressed start, and away it went. I wasn't worried at all about getting soaked, because I'd set the map — it knew where I was standing wasn't lawn.

02Unboxing & Setup: 10 Minutes, No Digging

I set it up in the dry backyard. Don't push the stakes in straight away — place it first and check the water reaches where you need it. In a backyard this size it will. Then it's stakes in, hose on, power on, and pair it to your Wi-Fi in the app. That's generally all there is to it: about 10 minutes and you're watering.

One tip that'll save you a phone call: it runs on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. When you're pairing, make sure your phone is on the 2.4 network, not the 5. If it won't connect, that's almost always why — and it's not the sprinkler's fault.

Out of the box and onto the lawn — place it, hose on, power on, pair the app. Ten minutes to watering.

03One Unit Instead of an In-Ground System

Think about what this is replacing. A proper in-ground irrigation system is five to eight separate bits of gear, anywhere from $500 to $2,000+, and one to three days of someone digging up your lawn to put it in. This is one unit — controller, rotor sprinkler and electric valve — that measures 18 × 14 × 30 cm, weighs 2.6 kg and just sits in the grass. No trenching, no digging, nothing wrecked. When you're done, you pick it up and put it away.

04Water Savings: 82L Used, 54L Saved

This is the whole point. On one run, the app showed 82 litres used and 54 litres saved. That's not a claim off a box — that's my lawn, on my phone. Aiper puts it at up to 40% water savings against watering the normal way, and there are two reasons it adds up.

One: it only puts water where you've mapped it. Two: the app pauses the schedule when rain's coming. Up here that's worth a lot — it'll bucket down an hour after the sprinklers have run, and you've just wasted the lot. The app also keeps the records, so you can see how much has gone on each zone, every time.

05Six Zones, Mapped to Your Actual Yard

You get up to six watering maps, and each one can be a point, a line or an area — whatever shape your yard actually is. Each zone gets its own days, its own run time and its own volume of water. So the thick grass at the back and a garden bed full of plants don't get treated the same, because they shouldn't be.

Six maps — points, lines or areas — each with its own days, run time and volume.

Out the back I mapped from one corner of the lawn right around to the other, and it got straight to work — programs itself, goes round, and adjusts to where the grass is. The grass back here drinks a lot of water very quickly, so getting coverage right up to the wall matters, and it got there.

06Adaptive Flow & EvenRain

Watch the hose and you can see it working: when it swings onto a bigger stretch of grass, it increases the flow. Small path on one side, larger area on the other — it just turns the water up and down to suit. I had it set to 3 mm, which sounds tiny, but the lawn gets the drenching it needs.

It's not a sprinkler blasting one fixed circle and hoping. It's a soft curtain of water designed to fall like actual rain, which soaks in deeper instead of running off or bouncing back off the path. It throws up to 12 m (39 ft) and goes a full 360°, which is where the coverage figure comes from — up to 445 m². Aiper puts that as five tennis courts, 15 car parking spaces or 10 studio apartments. On a normal backyard, that's a lot.

07The Canal Test: Water Stops Where the Lawn Stops

The mapping matters even more on a block like ours. That's a canal right there, and nobody wants half their water going into it. You map where the lawn actually stops, and that's where the water stops. It also meant I didn't have to worry about it hosing down my robot lawn mower parked on the edge.

08Front Yard: The Dead-Patch Test

Out the front was the real challenge — a very dry patch of grass that hadn't been watered in a long time. I brought the IrriSense out, put it in the middle, mapped it and let it run. It covered the whole patch evenly on its own, which is exactly what hand watering never managed. To be straight with you, a few weeks isn't long enough to show a full recovery — that's what the follow-up is for.

09Remote Control, Extra Outlet & Anti-Theft

You can run the whole thing from anywhere — start it, pause it, change it from inside on the couch or from another state. You get a notification when a zone starts and when it's finished. There's an extra outlet on it too, so it's not locked to being a sprinkler: hose off it to wash the car, or let the kids run through it in summer. It's modular, packs down for storage, and it has anti-theft built in — which you want on something sitting out on an open lawn.

The Verdict & Who It's For

What I love: it replaces an in-ground system without a single trench, it's watering within 10 minutes of opening the box, and it only puts water where you've mapped it. The adaptive flow genuinely works — you can watch it turn up for the bigger stretches — and the rain-delay scheduling is worth a lot in a place where it buckets down an hour after you've watered. Seeing 82L used and 54L saved on my own phone is what sold me. On a canal block, being able to stop the water exactly where the lawn ends is the feature I'd pay for on its own.

The catches, honestly: it needs power and a hose at the lawn, so you'll want an outdoor point within reach. It's 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only — sort that out before you start pairing. The 40% saving is Aiper's figure; my 54L is one run on my lawn, and yours will depend on your yard and how you watered before. Six zones and 445 m² suit a normal suburban block; bigger yards will need more than one unit. And this is a couple of weeks of testing, not a full season — I'll report back on how the dead patch recovers and how it holds up long term.

Who's it for? Anyone with a small-to-medium lawn who's sick of dragging the hose around, renters or anyone who doesn't want to dig up the yard for in-ground irrigation, and anyone watching their water use heading into a dry season. If your lawn is a tiny strip you can water in two minutes, you probably don't need it. But if you've got a lawn that's slowly dying round the side, it fits.
