JBL Charge 6 Review – Waterproof, Drop & Beach Test vs JBL Charge 5

What if your speaker could survive drops, pool plunges, and sandy beach sessions—while still delivering punchy, powerful sound all day long? That’s exactly what JBL promises with the new JBL Charge 6. In this hands-on review, I’ll unbox it, put it through waterproof and durability tests, compare it to the JBL Charge 5, and show you whether this is the ultimate outdoor Bluetooth speaker for 2025.

Unboxing & Design – Classic JBL with Tougher Upgrades

Inside the box, JBL keeps things simple: the Charge 6 speaker and manuals. Unlike previous generations, there’s no USB-C charging cable included—JBL says this helps reduce e-waste. Luckily, most of us already have one lying around.

The design remains classic JBL but with rugged improvements. The fabric feels premium, the logo is bold, and the new wider, flatter base ensures it won’t roll off tables. The chunkier passive radiator bumpers add protection, and for the first time, JBL has added a detachable strap so you can carry or sling it with ease.

Setup & Features – IP68 Waterproofing and More

Powering on is instant. The new button layout feels clean and intuitive, and it pairs seamlessly via Bluetooth. The Charge 6 is IP68-rated, meaning it’s fully dustproof and waterproof up to 1.5 meters for 30 minutes. JBL also claims it can survive a 1-meter concrete drop—so of course, I tested that (more on this below).

One of the biggest upgrades is support for Oracast instead of JBL’s older PartyBoost system. This means you can now link the Charge 6 with newer JBL models like the Flip 7 or Extreme 4 for multi-speaker setups. However, note that it’s not backward-compatible with the Charge 5.

Real-World Testing & Performance

Waterproof & Drop Test

I dropped the JBL Charge 6 into the pool—and unlike the Flip 7, which sinks, the Charge 6 floated. It kept playing music without skipping a beat, with ripples dancing across the water from its passive radiators. At the beach, it shrugged off sand with no issues, and in drop tests from shoulder height onto concrete, it powered on and played normally. Durability? ✔️ Passed.

Sound Quality – More Power with AI Sound Boost

Under the hood, the Charge 6 packs a total of 45 watts of output, up from 40W on the Charge 5. Bass is deeper, mids are clearer, and vocals shine. The real star is AI Sound Boost, JBL’s new feature that analyzes your audio in real time to push volume while keeping distortion under control. Even at max volume, it’s impressively clean, though highs can bite slightly.

In my testing—from indoor gaming sessions to outdoor park parties—the Charge 6 consistently delivered loud, punchy, and full-bodied sound. At 60–70% volume, it easily fills a backyard or beach gathering without distortion.

Battery Life & Charging

The Charge 6 is rated for 24 hours of playback, with up to 28 hours if you enable Playtime Boost (which reduces bass for longer runtime). It also doubles as a power bank, letting you charge your phone or devices directly from the speaker. Quick charging via USB-C means you’ll be ready for your next trip fast.

App Features

The JBL Portable app unlocks powerful customization with a 7-band EQ (a major step up from the 3-band EQ on the Charge 5). You can tweak bass, mids, and treble to your liking, toggle AI Sound Boost and Playtime Boost, and pair multiple speakers with Oracast.

Who is the JBL Charge 6 For?

The Charge 6 is perfect for:

  • Outdoor adventurers – Beach, pool, and camping use thanks to IP68 waterproofing and rugged design.
  • Party hosts – Big sound, AI Sound Boost, and Oracast make it ideal for backyard gatherings.
  • Travelers – Lightweight, durable, and doubles as a power bank for your devices.
  • JBL fans – A clear upgrade over the Charge 4 or 5, with better sound and app features.

Comparison – JBL Charge 6 vs Charge 5

So how does it stack up against the JBL Charge 5?

  • More power: 45W vs 40W
  • Stronger bass and clarity
  • Better waterproof rating: IP68 vs IP67
  • Drop-resistant
  • Detachable strap included
  • 7-band EQ via app
  • Oracast instead of PartyBoost

The trade-offs? No AUX input, no included cable, and no PartyBoost backward compatibility. But overall, the Charge 6 is a major leap forward.

Final Verdict – Is the JBL Charge 6 Worth It?

After weeks of testing in real-world conditions—pool swims, beach sessions, drop tests, and park parties—the JBL Charge 6 has proven to be one of the best outdoor Bluetooth speakers of 2025. With louder, cleaner sound, AI Sound Boost, rugged waterproofing, and powerful battery life, it’s an upgrade that’s genuinely worth it.

Buy it if: You want a do-it-all speaker that can survive drops, water, and sand while still sounding amazing.
Skip it if: You’re heavily invested in older JBL PartyBoost speakers and need backward compatibility.

Never received it

I never received my purchase

Great watch, great price.

This is a quality wrist watch, not a cheap imitation. It looks just as it is advertised, it keeps impeccable time, and the weight of the watch feels like it should, solid and is an asset to my daily dress wardrobe.

Still waiting ............

I was emailed a request by the merchant to rate the ring I purchased three weeks ago. However, I have yet to receive. I am still going to rate my purchase Five stars in hopes that I receive my ring and it looks as good in person as it does in pictures. I realize this item is delivered from China and
hope that’s the reason for its delay. Fingers crossed.
